I know I am a shi3a and all. But like I explained before, I don't know much about my 'group' of people. Hence this question - if anyone can answer it for me; What is Eid Al Ghadeer all about?

Eid alghadeer represents the day that the Prophet Mohd (swt) stopped in an area called 'ghadeer khom' on his return journey from his last Hajj pilgrimage (hajjat alwida3). He stopped the entire group of ppl he was with (in hundreds) and in front of everybody he lifted Imam Ali's hand and said the following famous hadeeth which is recorded by both shi3a and sunni scholers:
قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم:) كأني قد دعيت فأجبت إني تارك فيكم الثقلين أحدهما أكبر من الآخر كتاب الله وعترتي أهل بيتي فانظروا كيف تخلفوني فيهما فإنهما لن يتفرقا حتى يردا علي الحوض إن الله مولاي وأنا ولي كل مؤمن من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه اللهم وال من والاه وعاد من عاداه.
The last part especially:
من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه اللهم وال من والاه وعاد من عاداه
So we believe the prophet declared his successor, Imam Ali on this special day. ٍ
فقال عمر بن الخطاب بخ بخ لك يا ابن أبي طالب ، أصبحت مولاي ومولى كل مسلم
