The Royal Oman Police has informally requested the Omani football team fans to stay within the boundaries of road rules and regulations when the issue to cheer their national football team comes to hand (please see links).

In a statement in the local Shabiba Arabic daily newspaper, it said that 'it may seem to others that acting out in such a manner may display happiness and pride in the great achievement that the Omani national football team had achieved..'.

If people are not allowed to express the joy they feel when it comes to matters such as celebrating your local football team's achievements in freedom that does not deprive anyone else of their's; then where is the fun in watching the game at all. In that case, then there should be no football matches, televised or otherwise. If that is the case, there should be no bother from giving the football fans discounted tickets to the football arena to cheer on their favorite football team.

There may be a line to draw in these situations; but there should also be some leniency towards such issues whereby the law looks away in the spirit of sportsmanship.

Agree with you. I think the team would appreciate a show of passion from the fans.

I wish I could get to see the games. I hear they are doing real well, if you know any clips available online, I would be greatful.

And what happened today in Muscat?

Not that many people went out to the streets to celebrate Oman's victory.

What shame.

celebrate fine, but none of that throwing stones at police and burning old tyres in the streets. thats just unnecessary

where were they burning the tires and throwing stones at the police in Muscat?

And did you see this happen or are you just 'passing on' the piece of news?

I think that the police have to enforce such rules because, quite unfortunately, many of these fans tend to become unruly and ruin the chance for the civilized fans to express their happiness like humans and not animals.
Last year (after a victorious football match), a female friend of mine was driving home from work when her car (and the cars around her) was attacked by a fanatic mob of boys and men. Somehow, I don't think that stopping traffic, jumping on her car and pushing it from side to side, is considered rational and humane behavior.
Peeling out and doing donuts with a car among a crowd of spectators is also not rational or safe behavior...
Stopping traffic with no consideration for those that may have an emergency and need to use those public roads is also not rational behavior.
I agree...show team spirit, but there are too many that tend to lose brain cells after a victorious match.

LOL 3anooda was referring to current Lebanon (we think?)

Anyway, funny how the cops swerve right in to curb national pride - but why is the reaction so slow when it comes to national securit re. the recent flood, rains and damage.

Spoilsports indeed.
